With entries now at 187, you had better be quick to enter this event as the regions age group athletes will now be battling it out for the honours.

I spoke to Gary wright and Neil jefferson (QE2 event organisers) who said that it was a honour and a privilege for the QE2 triathlon to have been selected as the regional sprint distance championship event for 2010, Gary also added that having the bike route on closed roads and the children`s triathlon events also being held along with the adults,The QE2 Triathlon event will be triathlon`s chance to show the surrounding local community what a great sport we are involved in.

Neil added that the 63 remaining places in the event will be gone very quickly, now that the QE2 is the North Regional sprint distance championshp event for 2010 and advised anyone thinking of entering to do so quickly.

The second of the 4 Try-a-Tri’s was held at Ashington Leisure Centre on 20th March and proved to be another great sucess. 32 people attended, which was an increase on the first day. Gary Wright took over the reigns in the pool and assisted by yours truly, filled in admirably for Neil Bowers by running an excellent technique and drills session.

Barry Jameson made his first appearance after breaking his leg recently and with his chief demonstrators by Barry Taylor and Shaun Branegan, conducted a great core strength session in the Gym and a superb run session outdoors to finish the day off.

Once again many thanks to all the coaches for putting on another very professionally organised programme targeting a range of people with mixed abilities. Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the experience and virtualy all of them signed up, there and then, for the next one.

The next Try-a-Tri day takes place at Druridge Bay Country Park on Saturday 17th April.

How could i Forget !!! it took me 6 days to stop laughing and put this on the post.

Last Sunday when we were out for our usual Sunday morning group ride ( i must say in very warm and sunny conditions) We were on our way back home and as we rode into Longhirst we could see that there was a bike race taken place around the Longhirst - Hebron road.

We decide to stop at the side of the road and watch the cyclists fly past on the other side of the road, We all slowly came to a stop, (Well nearly all of us !!!) For some unexplained reason… Tony thinks he can keep his shoes clipped into his pedals whilst standing still ( he forgot to unclip his shoes !! ) ………Yes u guessed, he fell over in slow motion, crashing to the floor, unable to get his shoes unclipped in time…now, I do not know if you have seen this happen, but the look on his face said it all !!!!

Of course we all rushed to his aid to see if he had hurt himself….Ok Ok we did not, just because we could not stop laughing. The worst part of it was, if Tony had of just waited a extra minute to do it his girlfriend could of also seen it when she drove past….now that would of been unlucky….

Get well soon Tony !!! we will miss you this weekend.

Typical !! The snow started to fall on Friday evening, the roads cleared up ok for our ride today. We decided to keep to the coastal roads to keep away from the ice on the minor roads, so we headed up to Alnmouth. BrianJ joined us today, he has entered the Ashington triathlon in April and read that we meet at Morpeth at 0930hrs, so he joined us for our ride today…welcome BJ.

The pace was nice and steady going up to Alnmouth and we climbed the hill up via the train station, unfortunately we had to turn around at the top as the road was covered in snow and ice…so we had to go back the way we came.

A hail and Snow shower hit us just outside Warkworth…(How cold was that ?).We returned via Amble then Ashington with the pace getting extremly hot on the way back…..(that would be DavyB and garyW`s fault !)

A great bike ride today 3hrs 15 mins long with a good bit of tempo riding in the middle + end.

If you would like to join us, we meet at Guide post - Queens Head pub @ 0915hrs, Morpeth (mountain sports shop) @ 0930hrs…all welcome to come along.

Completing your first Triathlon is a great achievement and beleive it or not, it’s something that most people can do with a little bit of encouragement and some good training and advice. You don’t have to be a superfit athlete and there are all shapes, sizes and ages competing.

For outdoor events, you will need a wetsuit and goggles. We provide people with a swim cap in our events. You will need to wear something below your wetsuit. Most people will wear a Tri suit. This is kept on for the bike and run parts of the race and makes the transition from swim to bike quicker. You may not have a tri suit…It doesn’t matter, you could just wear a bathing costume.

Your bike must be road worthy and in good condition. You don’t need a fantastic racing bike, people do use mountain bikes but they are alot slower. Obviously you will need a helmet and this must be worn at all times on the bike. Cycling mitts and glasses are a good idea.

If you want a bit more advice why not come along to the Try a tri days we are running. http://trinorthumberland.sweat365.com/2010/02/02/try-a-tri-days-2/

We would also suggest you come along to some of the coaching and training sessions we are running in the QE2 country park lake, near Woodhorn, Ashington.

We can point you in the direction of several good Triathlon Clubs depending on where you live. They are all very friendly and will give you some sound advice and help.

The British Triathlon web site may also be of help to you and you may consider joining as you do get good insurance cover for training and competing together with cheaper entry to events. http://www.britishtriathlon.org/

All our events are open for entry now and there is no set closing date. We do expect that each event will fill up, so you shouldn’t leave it too long!

Hope this helps. If you need any further help just drop us and email at tri-northumberland@googlemail.com

The weather is still doing it`s best to keep us indoors, but not today 10 of us were out and about on our bikes around Northumberland. We even had the pleasure of an old friend of ours joining us on the road (JB), We have not seen JB for ages.We decided that the only place to go was to the heart of Northumberland and that mean`t to Esldon via “the Gibbett”. The Gibbett is a lovely climb from the `Morpeth` side, but it is a little bit steeper from the Elsdon side !! The pace was faster than usual, probably cos we have been kept indoors for the last 2 months and everyone was chomping at the bit to hit the road!!

This was our first visit to “the Gibett” this year, I later found out that this was Tony`s first climb up the Gibbet from Elsdon……Tony has just started cycling with us this season…….Tony- a great effort - well done.

total time 3hrs 30mins - 60 miles and some good craic, which beats it all.

It all looked so good last Monday, Neil & myself were going to our very first CP30 bike test ( more of that in our next blog) in Coach Wright`s garage, We set up our turbo trainers and started our warm up under the watchful eyes of coach Wright. At this time it was -5c in the garage.Coach Wright had us doing a very structured and thorough warm up ..(the warm up itself would of been enough for one of my turbo sessions! ) Time to start the CP30 test and my Turbo decides it has had enough….it goes off, after several attempts to get it working,it just does not want to start…end of my test.. Neil keeps going and rightly so…I try to put lots of layers of clothes on as it is freezing……I stay in the garage to cheer Neil along. I get home late,I`m cold,my diners in the oven and i do not feel well.

Cold strikes me that night and i`m off work the rest of the week…my first week back into training and i`m having to rest!!

I started to train again on Monday, but only a easy spin session, I`m going to start at Week 1 again, but a little easier….

Have you done your CP30 test ?

Remember a few weeks ago a cold struck and I decided to stop training for a few days to get over it. Well here we are almost a month later and i’ve just started training again. Good job it happened when it did and not in the middle of my training for the 2010 season!!

Anyway, I managed to get out for a couple of short runs on Christmas day and Boxing day and did a great turbo yesterday. It would appear that I haven’t lost as much strength as I thought I would!! 10min warm up then 20 x (1 min hard, 1 min easy) 10min cool down This is a great session and doesn’t drag on. The hard is big ring, smallest cog and highest setting on the turbo. 60 RPM isn’t bad at the start, but by the end it is hard work!!

People have been asking why we have named our Middle distance triathlon `Couple` Challenge…………Is it for couples only?

Well…….It’s not for couples only and the reason why it’s named “Couple” challenge is :

The event is being held at Newbiggin by the Sea. In 2008 a new breakwater was built to protect the bay and on the breakway they put the biggest offshore sculpture in the UK. The sculpture is of a `Couple` (dressed in very modern clothing) standing above the breakwater looking out across the sea. I quite like the sculpture, when i swim out in the protected bay and up along the `Couple` it looks very imposing. What do you think?

It seemed appropriate to call the event after the sculpture…………come and have a look in person or check out Newbiggin-by-the-Sea at www.newbigginbythesea.co.uk

I was up early this morning and my faithful companion Levi (my golden retriever) knew it was beach run day ! The weather has turned pretty chilly up here in Northumberland, so it was a lovely and crisp morning .The sun was just starting to creep above the horizon on the sea…what a joy to be out and about. Levi enjoys his Saturday morning run/swim in the sea…..too cold for me so i just keep on jogging along the beach as he goes in and out of the sea. 45minute easy run,but with stunning views, the enjoyable part is that no-one else was on the beach.

I love Saturday`s !!

I have now just been told that I should be taking echinacea syrup to strengthen my immune system. I’ll give it a go and see what happens.

Echinacea was used by North American Plains’ Indians in various herbal remedies for coughs, colds, sore throats, and infections. In the 1880s, it was introduced into general US medical practice and grew rapidly in popularity.

When taken orally Echinacea can raise white blood cell activity to fight infection, and lower it when the body’s condition has improved. It can also help to increase secretions from the lymph nodes, mucus membranes and skin to help shorten the duration and reduce the severity of colds, flu and upper respiratory infections.

Externally it has been used to treat wounds and skin infections, psoriasis, eczema and inflammatory skin conditions.

The key active constituents of Echinacea are the immune-enhancing, water-soluble polysaccharides, flavonoids, essential oils, poly acetylenes, and the alcohol-soluble alkylamides and caffeic acid.

I had a terrible night’s sleep last night and got up this morning with a raging throat, sore chest, bad head, blocked up nose. Needless to say I rang into work sick!! I don’t like doing that but, it’s for the best and my work colleagues wouldn’t thank me for spreading it around.

What to do? Keep drinking plenty of fluids and flush it out? Dose up with paracetemols every few hours? Any ideas to speed the process along?

WOW was it cold, but it was great to feel the fesh cool sea air on the face and the fact that i was alone jogging along the beautiful cresswell beach.I did 30 minutes in total and now feel fully refreshed. We sometimes do not appreciate the beautiful places we have in Northumberland.

The first day in, I come down with a really sore throat, head cold and I’m generally feeling pretty rubbish!!….. Great start!!

Ok….. Better leave it a week and get myself straightened out and back to full health before launching into something that could make me alot worse. I’d rather loose a week now than a month later. Who knows it might just be a few days.

Well. This was one of the most tiring weekends I’ve had in a while. I didn’t realise that part of the coaching course would involve being coached by the other potential coaches.

On Saturday we we in the pool for almost 2 hours! Drills, sprinting and just swimming. I was shattered at the end. What a training session!! Sunday followed in a similar vien but involved Cycling and Running. I’m really ready for bed now!!

It was however, I have to say, very rewarding and something I would thoroughly recommend to all triathletes…… Do a British Triathlon L1 coaching course……. You will definitely find it interesting and no matter what your ability level, you will definitely learn something new.
